Recent events in the Premier League have highlighted an alarming trend where sports figures consider they are above the common standards of decency expected by society.  A notable incident involving Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis is a stark reminder that certain behaviours are unacceptable, regardless of the environment—be it an office, a pub, a school, or indeed, a sporting venue.

Marinakis was handed a five-match stadium ban after being found guilty of improper conduct for spitting on the floor as match officials walked past him in the tunnel. This incident occurred following Forest’s 1-0 defeat against Fulham on 28 September.

The independent commission, which assessed the evidence—including witness statements from match officials and CCTV footage—concluded that Marinakis’s actions were deliberate and constituted serious misconduct. His defence, citing a hacking cough attributed to his smoking habits, was dismissed as the officials did not report hearing any coughing, and the visual evidence contradicted his claim.

The decision to impose a significant punishment was made not only to penalise Marinakis but also to deter similar behaviour in the future.

Misconduct Among Nottingham Forest Management and Players

Nuno received a three-match touchline ban after being shown a red card for swearing at officials, while Gibbs-White received a one-match ban for his reaction to being sent off.

Although their admissions of guilt and expressions of remorse were taken into account, Nuno’s prior disciplinary issues influenced the severity of his punishment.
