Hansells top the bill for Norwich Philharmonic
Posted July 23rd 2012
Norfolk law firm, Hansells Solicitors&Financial Advisers, are the new sponsors of Norwich Philharmonic.
Last December, Hansells sponsored the Norwich Philharmonic’s Elgar concert as Elgar was a friend of Hansells’ partner Walter Hansell and also a client of the firm. Elgar and Walter Hansells’ friendship is also well documented in the famous Elgar diaries.
Launching the sponsorship with the Norwich Phil at St Andrew’s Hall, Roger Holden, Hansells’ Managing Partner said: “The EDP’s and Norwich Evening News’ incredible coverage of Elgar’s link with Hansells, Norwich, the Norfolk and Norwich Festival and our county, lead to a sell-out concert at St Andrew’s Hall.
“Hansells invited the world Elgar expert, Martin Bird and his wife Jane, to Norwich as Hansells’ guests as the concert featured Elgar’s Cello Concerto. Martin is working on compiling the Elgar Diaries, it’s a 10-year project, so this made it very special for us.”
Roger said: “We all thoroughly enjoyed the concert. The response from the public, orchestra, guests and the media was so overwhelming Hansells have now decided to sponsor the Norwich Philharmonic.”
Hugh Lansdell, Hansells Aylsham partner said: “The Elgar concert was a really enjoyable evening and an excellent event to sponsor. We are all delighted Hansells are the new sponsors of Norwich Philharmonic. We are honoured to be able to support such an historic and integral part of the county’s culture.”
Norwich Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus started in 1841. It has a wide variety of musicians who play to a very high level including peripatetic music teachers and former professional musicians from across Norwich and Norfolk. The size of the orchestra depends on each work and is generally between 65-75 musicians with up to 120 singers in the choir.
Caroline Dixey, Chairman of Norwich Philharmonic Society said: “We are so delighted that Hansells have decided to sponsor Norwich Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus. Sponsorship is very important to us as it helps us underpin the work that goes into the concert season. We are glad to have Hansells support to allow us to achieve our artistic ambitions.”
Norwich Phil has a fabulous and varied repertoire next season starting with Holst’s The Planets on 10 November and ending with Elgar’s The Apostles on 16 March. Last December’s sell-out concert featuring Elgar’s Cello Concert helped Norwich Philharmonic appreciate just how popular Elgar is.
Caroline added: “Putting on concerts is expensive, especially for works like Elgar’s The Apostles which has six soloists, when most works feature four soloists. Holst’s The Planets uses a larger orchestra and more instruments so therefore we need larger staging, so sponsorship helps us cover those costs.”
Roger Holden added: “Hansells is very much looking forward to the start of the Norwich Philharmonic concert season. We’re particularly excited to see a whole concert dedicated to Elgar. The Apostles was performed at the Norfolk&Norwich Triennial Music Festival in 1905 when Walter Hansell met Elgar for the first time.”
“The choral masterpiece is rarely performed so we are thrilled people in Norwich, Norfolk and beyond will have the chance to hear it, presented by the city’s very own orchestra and chorus.”
Hansells sponsorship will enable Norwich Philharmonic to keep ticket prices down ensuring they remain affordable and open to a wide cross-section of the general public. Top price tickets will remain at £16. Students and people under the age of 26 can go to a concert for £5.
As well as Holst’s The Planets and Elgar’s The Apostles, performances include Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 2, Dvorak’s Symphony No. 7, Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto and Mahler’s Symphony No. 1.
Tickets for Friends and Benefactors go on sale on Monday 23 July with public booking from Monday 6 August, available from Prelude Records on 01603 62 83 19.
